Abstract

A procedure for analyzing permethylated iridoid glycosides by GLC/MS is described. Four different plant extracts containing various types of iridoid structures have been separated by column chromatography. These purified fractions as well as a total of 13 authentic iridoids have been methylated and analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The extraction of 10 g dried plant material gave sufficient yields to identify known iridoids by the mass-and infrared-spectra of their methylated derivatives. The methylation of carbonyl group containing glycosides resulted in O- and C-methylation and some other reactions. The structure of the methylated products of various representative iridoids has been determined by mass-and 1H-nmr-spectroscopy.
