Significance

The authors have introduced a new class of bifunctional oxazoline-thiourea catalysts for the asymmetric aza-Henry reaction of nitromethane and N-Boc aryl imines. With 10 mol% of catalyst 1, good to high yields (68-94%) and high enantioselectivities (er = 87:13 to 95:5) have been obtained for different N-Boc aryl imines. Other nuclephiles such as 1-nitropropane and nitroethane have also been used and high enantioselectivities (er = 95:5) have been obtained.
