Significance

Structurally defined ionic imidazolium oligomers 1a-d were applied to the solution-phase synthesis of supported peptides in gram scale. Thus, the first amino acid was covalently bound to the support 1a-d through esterification to give 2a-d. The sequential reactions of the Boc removal with TFA followed by the amino acid coupling with HBTU and HOBt afforded nonapeptide 3c. The imidazolium-supported dodecapeptide 5 and pentadecapeptide 7 were prepared from 4 and 6 in 95% and 99% yields, respectively.
