Significance
Ruthenium complex 3 which is capable of acting as a molecular turnstile was synthesized using optimized Suzuki coupling conditions. Within each of the five arms of 3, the insulating bicyclo[2.2.2]octane component electronically isolates the five electroactive ferrocene components. This architecture promotes through-space electron transfer between ferrocene units and will allow for redox-driven rotary motion in a single molecule.
