Significance
A series of λ3-phosphinines, the phosphorus analogues of pyridines, are synthesized from the corresponding pyrylium salts in 20-46% yields. These compounds are then further functionalized to λ5-phosphinines in 80-84% yield. Photophysical characterizations revealed that the λ5-phosphinines are moderately luminescent ( 5-20%) and phosphoresce at low temperatures whereas the λ3-phosphinines are not luminescent.
