Significance

An established procedure was adapted to the synthesis of the dithienylethene (DTE)-bridged diiron complex 2. Complex 2 contains both a photochromic moiety (the DTE bridge) and two redox-active metal centers. The two iron centers of 2 are electronically isolated from each other; however, photoinduced electrocyclization of the DTE bridge (to form complex 3) effected electronic communication between the iron centers, thus qualifying this system as a photoresponsive molecular wire.
