Significance
Previously reported alkyne coupling required the use of divicinal dicarbonyl substrates as coupling partners. The authors demonstrate the use of heteroaromatic aldehydes and ketones are isoelectronic with the dicarbonyl counterparts. Although the use of this system is restricted to 2-pyridinyl or related heterocyclic derivatives, it demonstrates the high selectivity and large scope of the reaction.
