Abstract

From the crude drug “rorotsū”, the fruits of Liquidambar formosana, which are used in Taiwan as a liver-protective drug, seven constituents were isolated. Three were new compounds and their structures were determined as shown in formulas 1,2, and 3 based on spectral and chemical evidence. Among the isolated constituents, beturonic acid revealed remarkable protective activity on chemically-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.
