Significance

High enantioselectivity has been achieved for the cyanation of aldehydes. A novel multicomponent bifunctional catalyst system has been designed and optimized for this reaction. In order to activate the nucleophile, the use of a 5,5′-dibromo BINOL as the ligand for the titanium Lewis acid and an amino alcohol/cinchonine combination as Lewis bases generates the reactive and selective system.
