Significance

A recyclable silica-supported phosphomolybdic acid catalyst (PMA-SiO2) promoting the Ferrier reaction was developed. PMA-SiO2 was prepared from H3PMo12O40 and silica gel in MeOH at room temperature. The Ferrier reaction of triacetyl glucal with allyltrimethylsilane by using the catalyst was performed at room temperature to give α-4,6-di-O-acetyl-2,3-unsaturated C-allyl glycoside in 89% yield. The catalyst was reused five times without loss of catalytic activity. Eighteen examples of the Ferrier reaction with various nucleophiles such as alcohols and thiols were demonstrated (84-94% yield).
