Significance

A platinum-catalyzed cyclization of functionalized 2-(1-alkynyl)-2-alkene-1-ones incorporating nucleophilic addition of the applied solvent leading to the formation of 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans is reported. The reaction occurs under mild conditions and is compatible with many polar nucleophilic solvents including water, alcohols, amines, and ketones. Both cyclic and acyclic enynones undergo cyclizations generally in good to excellent yields.
