Significance
An organocatalytic Strecker reaction has been described. The N-heterocyclic carbene generated in situ from imidazolium chloride 2 (5 mol%) and KOt-Bu (4 mol%) mediates the addition of TMSCN to aldimines 1 to give products of type 3 in high yields. Linear and branched alkyl substrates as well as aryl precursors can be used. Furthermore, mechanistic considerations based on NMR spectroscopy are provided.
