Significance

Reported is a facile synthesis of ­regioisomeric pyrroloindoles via thermally induced [4+1] cyclization between indole isocyanates (derived efficiently from commercial indole carboxylic acid derivatives) and dimethoxy or bis(propylthio)- carbenes. In general, the dimethoxy carbene precursor gives better scope and yields.
