Significance

The first synthesis of ferrocene-substituted pyridines B and C using ultrasound-promoted sodium alkoxide mediated condensation of chalcones A with malononitrile in good to excellent yields has been realized. The control reaction performed without ultrasound assistance afforded low product yields. Unexpectedly, use of the pyridine-2-yl chalcone (A) under the same conditions led to the formation of 2-alkoxy-4-­pyridyl-6-ferrocenyl-pyridine corresponding to C by a decyanation reaction.
