Significance

γ-Butyrolactams possess a wide range of biological activity, which make them valuable scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. They have been synthesized in good yield and enantioselectivity by a Pd(II)-catalyzed cyclization of 4′-X-2′-butenyl 2-alkynoates (X = leaving group) in the presence of a chiral nitrogen-containing ligand.
