Aus der Pränatalen Psychologie haben wir gesicherte Hinweise darauf, dass sich bewusste wie auch unbewusste Einstellungen der Mutter zum Kind auf das Wohl des Fetus und dessen spätere Bindung zur Mutter auswirken. Es ist jedoch schwierig, das Konstrukt Bindung bereits für die vorgeburtliche Zeit anzuwenden bzw. Daten dazu zu erfassen.

Es ist außerdem bekannt, dass die weitere kindliche Entwicklung bis hinein ins Schulalter auch durch Umwelteinflüsse entscheidend geprägt wird. Inwieweit diese langfristigen Einflüsse bereits präpartal speziell durch die präpartale Bindung zu den Eltern bestimmt werden, ist der Literatur nicht eindeutig zu entnehmen.

In einer eigenen Studie gingen wir deshalb der Frage nach, inwieweit die präpartale Mutter-Kind-Bindung die postpartale Bindung langfristig beeinflusst.
