Significance
While the field of asymmetric hydrogenations utilizing Rh and Ru has been extensively studied, the use of systems that are stable to air and water remains an important goal for both laboratory and industrial use. The authors report that the fluorinated ligands are much more stable towards air and water and even the Rh-ligand complex is stable and retains high selectivity in their presence. The ligand with R = CF3 and Ar = Ph showed high stability, reactivity, and selectivity. A huge class of substrates was tested with the majority giving >95% ee with many giving >99% ee.
