Significance

The syntheses of three novel imidazolium-containing heterocalixarenes are described in this report. The pathways presented are straightforward and provide good yields. These molecules represent a new class of calixarenes, which contain cations in the frame of the macrocycle. Crystal structures of the n = 2 molecule and its thiourea derivative are also presented.
