Significance

Spongistatin 1 (also known as Altohyrtin A) is one of the most potent antimitotic agents ever tested by the National Cancer Institute with a GI50 = 1.3 × 10-10 M in the NCI 60 human carcinoma cell line. The Cambridge synthesis is perhaps the acme of reagent- and substrate-controlled directed aldol reactions in polyketide synthesis.
