Seit der Einführung der Kontrazeption gibt es eine Vielzahl mechanischer, elektronischer und hormoneller Kontrazeptiva auf dem Markt. Ein ideales Kontrazeptivum sollte Libido, Potenz und sexuelle Aktivität nicht beeinträchtigen, keine kurz- oder langfristigen Nebenwirkungen oder gar teratogene Effekte besitzen, selbstverständlich rasch wirksam, vollständig reversibel und sicher sein. Beide Partner sollten damit zurecht kommen [[1]]. An die Entwicklung in diesem Bereich werden große Erwartungen gestellt. Sie ist Gegenstand der Übersichtsarbeit.
