Pleuraergüsse finden sich bei über 40 % bakterieller Pneumonien. Der gewöhnliche parapneumonische Erguss ist klein und bildet sich unter einer adäquaten antibiotischen Therapie zurück. Wenn jedoch Bakterien in den Pleuraraum gelangen, können vielgestaltige Komplikationen vom komplizierten para-pneumonischen Erguss bis zum Pleuraempyem auftreten, die zur Verlängerung des Krankenhausaufenthaltes führen [10].
