In den letzten 10 Jahren hat die technologische Weiterentwicklung der Sonographie einen derartigen Innovationsschub verliehen, dass es immer schwerer wird, die neuen Methoden zu überschauen oder gar bezüglich ihrer klinischen Relevanz einzuordnen. Der Einsatz schneller Bildprozessoren hat die modernen Ultraschallgeräte in »High-Tech«- Maschinen verwandelt, die das technologische Niveau von CT und MRT erreicht oder sogar überschritten haben.

Hierbei kann man die verschiedenen Innovationsbereiche in Methoden zur verbesserten visuellen Darstellung des Grauwertbildes, Methoden zur Verbesserung der Datenpräsentation, Echokontrastmittel-Anwendungen sowie Methoden des Parametrischen Ultraschalls unterteilen. Die Leber, als größtes abdominelles Organ, nahm dabei von Anfang an einen großen Anteil an der Erprobung dieser neuen Technologien ein.
