The synthesis of a new constitutionally unsymmetric, configurationally stable (since 7-membered) biaryl lactone is described. Among several `redox-neutral' and reductive coupling methods tested, only the Ni(0)-mediated intramolecular ring closure of suitably substituted dihalogen esters gave 7-membered biaryl lactones.
