The Heck reaction is compared with the Stille reaction in the elaboration of the Z-2,E-4 diene acrylate unit in the model compounds 2a and 2b as an approach to the polyene macrolide core of the immunosuppressant agent pateamine 1 produced by the marine sponge Mycale sp.
