Our studies indicate clearly that mesoionic compounds are amphiphilic heterocyclic betaines - not aromatic - in which the separate positive and negative regions act as independent moieties. This was confirmed by the condensation of mesoionic compounds with a structurally similar mesoionic hydrochloride forming "dimeric" products.
