4-Diazocyclohexa-2,5-dienone derivatives are presented as photosensitive reagents generating reactive carbene species which allow efficient photo-coupling reactions with proteins. However, during such coupling reactions, the photogenerated hydroquinones can initiate undesired redox side reactions.
