Crystal engineering represents an extension of synthetic chemistry from classical intramolecular change into the less charted areas of solid state intermolecular assembly. In order to use such processes effectively we need to understand how weak intermolecular forces operate between molecules and how they might be controlled in a designed manner. This account describes some steps along this pathway using simple alicyclic and heterocyclic substrates as examples.
