Hydrogenation (H2/PdC) of estrone (1) gives estrane-3,17-dione (2), the 5α, 10α A/B ring fusion stereochemistry being established by NMR. Reduction of estrone using D2/PdC gives 1α,2α,4α,5α,6,6,9α,10α-d8-estrane-3,17-dione (3).
