The reaction of unsaturated halides and triflates with readily available 4-(o-acetamidophenyl)-3-buten-2-one and methyl 4-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-3-propenoate in the presence of KOAc and Pd(OAc)2, without phosphine ligands, affords substituted quinolines and coumarins through an in situ vinylic substitution/annulation sequence.
