The reactions of certain metal carbonyl cluster complexes with appropriately substituted cyclobutenes have provided routes to the first complexes containing cyclobutyne ligands. The cyclobutyne ligands are stabilized through extensive complexation to the metal atoms. Several have been structurally characterized by single crystal x-ray diffraction methods. Investigations of their reactivity have shown that their behavior is very similar to that of unstrained alkyne ligands, and there are only a few examples of reactions where opening of the four membered ring has been observed.
