Asymmetric dihydroxylation of the symmetrical diester 1 provided after lactonization the C2-symmetric bis-lactone 3. The chiral information was then propagated by a double alkylation reaction. After conversion of the alkylated bis-lactone 4a to the diol 8, a cleavage reaction provided the chiral building block 9.
