Various methyl allenecarboxylates were efficiently prepared from the corresponding BHT esters in a one-flask procedure which consisted the in situ generation of the ketene from the BHT ester and the successive HWE reaction with trimethyl phosphonoacetate anion in the presence of Sn2+ or Zn2+ cation.
