β-Keto phenylsulfones bearing a phenyl group linked to the carbonyl unit are efficiently desulfonylated using Bu3SnCl/NaBH3CN in t-BuOH at reflux. A 2 equivalent excess of the reducing couple and a catalytic amount of AIBN (0.1 equiv.) are required. An ample variety of functionalities remain unaffected under these conditions.
