An efficient synthesis of N-alkoxycarbonyl-O-alkoxycarbonyl and N-hydroxy α-amino acids has been developed utilizing a Mitsunobu reaction and N-alkoxycarbonyl-O-alkoxycarbonyl hydroxylamines as nucleophiles. The method also gives access to D- or L-α-amino acids by reductive cleavage of the N-hydroxy derivatives.
