The reaction between methyl S-prolinate and meso-norbornene derived anhydrides was found to give amido-acids with excellent asymmetric induction. This methodology provides an inexpensive route for the preparation of optically pure, polycyclic, highly functionalised starting materials for natural and unnatural product synthesis on a large scale.
