5-Aminoimidazole ribonucleoside (AIRs) 2 has been synthesised in three steps from the silver salt of 4(5)-nitroimidazole. C-Addition-elimination using a soft carbon electrophile provides a short biomimetic route to novel ribonucleoside analogues exemplified by the stretched adenosine 12.
