Porphycene, a structural isomer of porphyrin, is receiving increasing attention in coordination chemistry. As the solubility of the parent molecule is relatively poor, interest focuses on alkyl-substituted prophycenes as ligands. We report here the synthesis of a new alkylated porphycene (2,7,12,17-tetraethyl-3,6,13,16-tetramethylporphycene) which shows enhanced solubility in common organic solvents, and is capable of forming complexes with a wide range of metal ions.
