Addition of bromomagnesium triorganozincates, prepared from zinc chloride and three molar equivalents of Grignard reagents, to (-)-trans-2-phenylcyclohexyl (E)-2-oxo-4-phenyl-3-butenoate proceeded in a diastereoselective 1,2-fashion to afford the corresponding 2-substituted (2R,3E)-2-hydroxy-4-phenyl-3-butenoates in good yields.
