Some recent applications of polyfunctionally substituted alkylheteroaromatics as building blocks for synthesis of condensed heteroaromatics are reported. These include (a) synthesis of benzoazines utilising methyl-azinylcarbonitriles (b) synthesis of condensed azoles from functionally substituted methyl 1,3-azoles (c) synthesis of condensed heteroaromatics from trichloromethylazines and trichloromethylazoles. 1. Introduction 2. Studies with alkylazinylcarbonitriles. 2.1 Why alkylazinylcarbonitriles were investigated as potential building blocks for benzoazines. 2.2 Synthetic approaches to methylazinylcarbonitriles. 2.3 Synthesis of benzoazines from methylazinylcarbonitriles. 3. Studies with functionally substituted 1,3-alkylazoles. 3.1. Why functionally substituted methyl-1,3-azoles were investigated. 3.2. Synthetic approaches to functionally substituted methyl-1,3-azoles. 3.3. Functionally substituted methyl- 1,3-azoles as precursores to condensed azoles. 4. Synthesis with trichloromethylheteroaromatics. 4.1. Trichloromethylazines and trichloromethylazoles as building blocks for synthesis of condensed heteroaromatics.
