A new synthetic route to monosaccharides from simple achiral α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and chloroacetic acid was developed by using the catalytic asymmetric aldol reaction of 1-trimethylsiloxy-1-phenoxy-2-benzyloxyethene with the aldehydes in the presence of a novel chiral catalyst system consisting of tin(II) triflate, a chiral diamine, and tin(II) oxide.
