Metal-halogen exchange of N-protected 4-iodoimidazoles 4 and 5 in CH2Cl2 solution with EtMgBr generates the corresponding imidazol-4-yl anions. These were reacted either directly, or after modification by addition of other metal salts, with a variety of electrophiles to yield 4-substituted imidazoles 6-15 in 53-97% yield.
