The asymmetric dihydroxylation of α,β-unsaturated ketones has been investigated and found to give the corresponding α,β-dihydroxy ketones in good yields and excellent enantiomeric excesses. The problem of epimerization of the α-carbon has been eliminated by employing a buffered AD-mix containing sodium bicarbonate.
