Treatment of (Z)-(2,3,3-trifluoro-1-propenyl)trimethylammonium iodide, available in three steps from 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl o-nitrobenzenesulfonate, with various secondary amines in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide at 40-70°C gave rise to the corresponding Z isomers of α-fluoro-β-(dialkylamino)acrylaldehydes in good yields, together with a small amount of (Z)-α-fluoro-β-(dimethylamino)-acrylaldehyde.
