A stereoselective synthesis of 3-(1′-hydroxyethyl)-2-azetidinone, a key synthetic intermediate of carbapenem, is described. The method is based on a strategy that involves the selective imine-aldol reaction of a chiral imine with a silyl ketene acetal in the presence of a chiral boron reagent.
