Facile oxidation of cis-1,2-indandiol with sodium periodate to afford homophthalaldehyde [2-(formylmethyl)benzaldehyde] in quantitative yield is described. The reaction intermediate 3,4-dihydro-1H-2-benzopyran-1, 3-diol was isolated and characterized.
