The serine derived zinc/copper reagent 1 reacts efficiently with tricarbonyl(η5-cyclohexadienyl)iron salts 3 to give the cyclohexadiene complexes 4, which can be converted to the metal-free protected amino acids by treatment with trimethylamine N-oxide.
