Alkyl 1-allyl-1-methyl-2-oxopropyl carbonates 3, obtained from 3-methyl-1-penten-4-yn-3-ol (1) and carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of phosphine, are key reagents for the palladium-catalysed regio- and stereoselective synthesis of 5-substituted 3-methyl-3-penten-2-ones 4 by coupling with nucleophiles.
