A regioselective method for the preparation of 4-alkyl-2-methoxy substituted tricarbonyl(η5-cyclohexadienyl)iron(1+) salts 3 is described and applied to the preparation of a key intermediate {methyl 4-[(R)-6-cyano-3-oxo-1-cyclohexenyl] -3-methylbutyrate (2)} for an organoiron route for the synthesis of dihydrodioscorine.
