A detailed procedure is given for the preparation of very pure dimethoxycarbenium tetrafluoroborate (1) from trimethyl orthoformate by the reaction with diethyl ether-boron trifluoride complex and also for its reaction with dimethyl ether in dichloromethane which gives high purity trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate (2) in high yield.
