Diethyl (ethylthiomethyl)phosphonate on treatment with butyllithium at -78 °C gives the corresponding carbanion. Treatment of this carbanion with the monoarylhydrazones of 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds 2 at -70 °C followed by heating at 60 °C gives the cyclized 3,4-disubstituted 1-aryl-1H-pyrazoles 4 in good yield.
